What are some ideas for interesting, but uncommon travel destinations in the USA?

I am looking for places like Cairo, IL. It is where the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers meet and has a long history. Please nothing cliché.

How about Rodanthe, NC. No one had ever heard of it until the movie ‘Nights In Rodanthe’ was filmed there. No one knows the origin of the name Rodanthe. It is 15 miles off the mainland of North Carolina on Hatteras Island, part of what is known as the outer Banks. Cape Hattetras is the confluence of the south-flowing Labrador Current and the north-flowing Gulf Stream. The water right at the point of the cape is really wild. , You can climb the lighthouse. A little to the southwest is Ocracoke Island, accessible by FREE ferry, was a hangout of the pirate Blackbeard. Hardly any ‘uncommon’ places in America has a longer history.

Can you please choose your favorite between Las Vegas, Orlando, Mexico, Australia, Rome, Italy, Great Britain, New Zealand, Thailand, and Japan?

Of all that you listed, i’ve been to many. I love Vegas for its energy and fun. It is definitely a place to go for a couple of days to lose yourself in shows, good food, and some luck at gambling. Rome/Italy is one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been to. Love the food, culture and people…want to make it back again someday. Great Britain is also great, it offers alot of answers to history for some of us with English in our blood. I definitely loved the history traveling there. Mexico, not my favorite, just leave it at that. The others are on my list to-dos but have heard nothing but great things about. New Zealand is on top of my list (I love outdoorsy things and just think its more like me). Thailand, oh what a different culture, a whole new world to explore…fun! Japan and Australia – yes they would be very interesting, but not sure they are the top of my list yet.

I’m looking for a place that has a really good view, but the size of the cliff is a major determinant of my travel plans.

Madeira has the second highest sea cliff in the World – we’re off for our annual Spring jaunt in a few weeks.
First place for sea cliff height goes to New Zealand – seem to remember seeing when we did a tour of South Island a couple of years ago..

I like the cliffs just outside of Sydney Harbour, I would say the best view is from the water – if you like jet boats and going fast, this one is for you – http://www.oceanextreme.com.au/rush-hour.html.
From here you can see which cliffs you might want to visit and look out from from their view points, as there are many to choose from. Mind you, these cliffs aren’t crazy big, though crazy fisherman clamber down them, to me risking their lives.

Recommended 3-month travel destinations cheaper than Europe?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip for a minimum of 3 months and can’t quite decide where to go. We’ll be on a very tight budget but I’m desperate to travel and looking at going somewhere not necessarily on the tourist track, that will give us an experience but not cost us the earth! Ideas so far have been China, Mongolia and possibly Russia but not tied down to anywhere yet! Interested in hiring a motorbike or truck and hitting the road less travelled also, love markets and culture but not superficial theme parks or the like.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

sometimes it makes me cry when i dont have enough money to travel :’( go to SPAIN ive been dying to go there

For me the ultimate travel destination would have to be Alaska – I would love to have a white Chrissy, expierence snow for the first time!!! Go skiing, see the mountainside and I would LUV to see the Northern Lights phenomenon. I’ve heard its pretty damm spectacular!!
PS. I’m from Australia hence I’m looking for the complete opposite!! lol
